Wunderland Kalkar was created by Dutchman Hennie van der Most. The site was originally a Nuclear Power Plant that never went into operation. In 1991 he purchased the property and construction commenced to re-develop the grounds into a hotel, meeting and leisure complex. Officially opening for business in 1996, the hotel receives some 150,000 guests per year. Leaving the reactor building and cooling tower in place, an amusement park, now known as Kernies Family Park was opened in 2001. There are a total of 40 attractions, the highlight being the 58 meter high "Vertical Swing" housed in the cooling tower. The park attracts 300,000 people a year and combined with the hotel, is a popular destination for all clientele, whether for a short break, group tours, day trips, parties or business.

Wunderland Kalkar is ontstaan uit de voormalige kerncentrale "Schneller Brüter". In 1995 heeft de Nederlander Hennie van der Most deze kerncentrale gekocht en omgebouwd tot een hotel-, vergader- en vrijetijdscentrum.
